"So the orange is actually an okra and it is inspired by the flame because my partner and I, Navkirat, the poetress, who started the show and she was showing all of the scars on her legs, she and I were in a fire accident eight months back, and the whole collection was inspired by this accident and our recovery and resilience. And she was almost dying. And you were in the ICU. And like we were – we’ve been recovering since eight months."
(Reporter: "That’s so tragic.")
"And I was I was trying to save her. And I had an operation here (gestures to hand.)."

(Reporter: "So you dressed the Vice President’s wife for the pre-inauguration ball.")
Gupta: "So yes, she actually bought the garment, so it was not a sourced thing. She just bought it, it is like a customer buying a garment and wearing it.")
(Reporter: "How did you feel when you saw that?")
Gupta: "I was like, I don’t know her, I don’t know about her that much to be honest so I was like – ‘OK.’ I stay away from politics. I can support causes but for me it is like a client buying a dress. She’s Indian, she looked beautiful in it that’s all I can say."

STORYLINE:
Designer Gaurav Gupta said that a dramatic event that affected his partner and himself inspired his latest collection.
Gupta and Navkirat Sodhi were caught in a fire eight months ago, which burned Sodhi’s legs and damaged Guptas hand. At the beginning of his show at Paris fashion week, Sodhi read a poem, wearing a dress that showed her scars.
"The whole collection was inspired by this accident and our recovery and resilience," said the designer after the show.
Gupta’s collection used orange to suggest flames but, for the most part, models were draped in metallics or adorned with sparkling touches.
The most striking outfit saw a model covered in metallic embellishments, including across her face, with a high backed, black, structured dress curved around her body. The collection also featured headdresses, or hair structured into tracks across the head.
Usha Vance – the wife of U.S. vide president JD Vance – recently wore one of Gupta’s designs at the pre-inauguration ball. When asked about it, the designer said he likes to "stay away from politics," and said Vance was just a client buying a dress – he had no direct involvement in it, adding: "She’s Indian, she looked beautiful in it. That’s all I can say."
