STORYLINE:
Drums, cymbals and the noise of an enthralled crowd gave a cacophonous welcome to the lunar new year in Myanmar’s commercial capital, on Sunday.
Lion dancers leapt nimbly across platforms, watched by thousands of Yangon residents ahead of the start of the Year of the Snake, which falls on Wednesday.
As well as the customary celebrations, the ongoing festival includes musical and theatrical performances and a market selling traditional Chinese items and food.
The lunar new year comes just ahead of the start of the fifth year of turmoil in Myanmar, after the military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021.
The country has descended into a civil war, with guerrilla units and ethnic armed groups opposed to the takeover making unprecedented gains against the Myanmar army.
