STORYLINE:
Polls opened in the Belarus presidential elections on Sunday morning, with the expectation that authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko will remain in power.
Lukashenko, who has been in power for over 30 years, is poised to extend his rule in an election that concludes Sunday and that the opposition dismisses as a farce.
The 70-year-old autocrat was dubbed “Europe’s last dictator” for his relentless crackdown on dissent and free speech.
His victory in 2020 was denounced as fraudulent at home and abroad, and the country of nine million saw protests that lasted for months, with thousands of arrests.
Opposition activists were imprisoned or forced to flee abroad. Lukashenko has relied on support from main ally, Russia, and allowed Moscow to use Belarusian territory to invade Ukraine in 2022 and host some of Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons.
