STORYLINE:
Over 15 thousand people gathered on the streets of Cologne to protest against the rise of right-wing extremism in Germany.
The right-wing AfD (Alternative for Germany) political party has grown in popularity and is polling strongly.
The party has made gains in some eastern areas and there are fears about next month’s elections.
Britta Straschewski, 36, a teacher from Cologne, said she felt it was important to come out and protest.
"We see a party (AfD) that so far gets 20% of votes and might get more and this party shows openly a racist, discriminatory and intolerant attitude and I think it is important to set a signal for a tolerant and active democracy," she said.
The Cologne rally is being held on the day that the AfD opens their election campaign in Halle.
Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla are expected to speak and an audience of 4,500 people is expected.
