3. SOUNDBITE (English) David Chiu, San Francisco City Attorney:
"Donald Trump has repeatedly and blatantly disregarded the rule of law and our Constitution. This case will be appealed all the way up to the US Supreme Court, and he is using every weapon in his arsenal to attack our immigrant communities, our families, our workforce. And I’ll just say, as a point of irony, his first cabinet member, Senator Marco Rubio, wouldn’t be a citizen without birthright citizenship, as well as so many leaders in our country on both sides of the aisle."
4. Wide of speakers at the press conference
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Annie Lee, Director of Policy, Chinese for Affirmative Action:
"I want to emphasize that this executive order affects all immigrants. They want to put us against ourselves, lawful immigrants versus unlawful immigrants. But the truth is, they hate us regardless of our legal status. I know this because when a racist man screams at me to go back to my country, he does not know or care if I am a U.S. citizen, if I am here on a work visa or if I am undocumented. He looks at me and feels like I do not belong here. So make no mistake that the white supremacy which animates this illegal executive order impacts us all."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Bill Hing Ong, Professor of Law and Migration, University of San Francisco:
"This most recent clown like act that President Trump is engaging in, it is, of course, for publicity. But it’s also because there are some of his advisers who think that they can overturn an aspect of Wong Kim Ark. Any day now I am expecting a county official in Texas to refuse to issue a birth certificate to a child whose parents are undocumented."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Norman Wong, Great-Grandson of Wong Kim Ark:
"Whatever we have that’s in our hearts and in our minds, and that’s what we have to shape and change this country. We’re all Americans."

STORYLINE:
A group of Chinese Americans gathered in San Francisco’s Chinatown for a press conference to protest President Donald Trump’s executive order aiming to end birthright citizenship in the United States.

The rally, which drew dozens of community leaders and activists, highlighted concerns that the move would unjustly affect immigrant families, particularly those from Asian backgrounds.

Among those present were descendants of Wong Kim Ark, whose landmark Supreme Court case in 1898 solidified the principle of birthright citizenship in America.

The case involved Ark, a Chinese American man born in San Francisco, who was denied reentry into the U.S. after a trip to China, despite having been born on American soil.

The Supreme Court ruled in his favor, declaring that anyone born in the U.S. is automatically granted citizenship, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

This case is seen as a foundational moment in American civil rights history.

At the press conference, hosted by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, which helped litigate Wong Kim Ark’s case more than a century ago, community activists said Trump’s executive order undermines a century-old legal precedent that protects all children born in the country.
