STORYLINE:
In Rio de Janeiro’s summer, beaches remain full even after sunset. The city had multiple days past 40ºC (104 F) in the last week, with people swimming at night to cool off.

On Friday night, many residents of the Brazilian city enjoyed Arpoador beach, in Rio’s south.

With temperatures a bit lower than the beginning of the week, when the maximum temperature reached 48.9ºC, residents still turned to the ocean to relax.

“During the day is very hot and the beach is packed. At night, it’s better, and at home is not nice to stay. Some people come to sleep. I intend to stay until midnight,” said Herniton Monteiro, who lives on the city’s north side.

For three days, Rio’s City Hall raised the heat index to Heat Level 3 – out of a scale of five.
