4. SOUNDBITE (English) Enrique Lopezlira, Director, UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research:
"There’s a lot of misconceptions about who gets paid low wages. And one of the biggest one is that these are all high school kids earning that. And actually, most of the low wage workers, including fast food workers, are adults and most of them are the main provider in their families and are supporting families. It’s important to also distinguish between the minimum wage and the living wage. And even though minimum wages have gone up in many states and localities, they’re still not paying a living wage. What is a living wage? A living wage is a wage that allows workers to be self-sufficient and provide for their families."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Enrique Lopezlira, Director, UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research:
"And so what does that mean? It means that you cannot make ends meet with your current job. And that usually forces people to have to look for a second job or maybe even a third job in order to make enough of a wage to provide for their families."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) TiAnna Yeldell, Fast Food Worker:
"I have a second job just to stay on top of everything. Being a mother, I do what I’m supposed to do for my kids, and I know my children feel like you always at work. You’re never here. But most of the time, if I’m here, I’m just resting. And then I do try to spend time with them. We try to go out and do other stuff, but most times I’m tired and they understand."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) TiAnna Yeldell, Fast Food Worker:
"To be fair, I think they just need to kind of raise it up a little bit because the wages that they give people now is something from 20 years ago. You all got to start stepping up with the times."

STORYLINE:
The only time TiAnna Yeldell has to herself is when she’s sleeping, and that doesn’t happen much.
The single mom of three works 80-hour weeks to provide for her children, aged 8, 14, and 18.
During the day, she is a driver for Pizza Hut, where she earns $9.50 an hour before tips.
At night, she cleans trains for Houston’s Metro system, where she earns about $17 an hour.
On days she pulls both shifts, Yeldell sleeps for just two to three hours before getting her kids up and ready for school. Then she does it all again.
