STORYLINE:
Brazilians have been overjoyed after the motion picture “I’m Still Here” received three Oscar nominations on Thursday: best film, best international feature, and best actress for its lead, Fernanda Torres.

“Three historic nominations and a country in celebration,” Brazil’s government posted on X. “You can celebrate: our cinema is among the best in the world!”

The announcement quickly trended on social media and sparked a flood of memes, including jokes about organizing a national caravan to the Oscars.

Many users likened the excitement to watching the World Cup.

TV Globo, Brazil’s largest network, interrupted its morning programming to air the announcement of the best actress nominees.

During the day, tourists and residents were seen visiting the house used to shoot the movie in Rio de Janeiro’s Urca neighborhood.

The house is very similar to the original house, in Leblon, where Rubens Paiva and Eunice Paiva lived with their family, the main characters of the story based on true events, set in the 1970s.

“It’s an honour to Brazil and our culture. To be represented, the whole world is seeing our art, the Brazilian cinema. It’s a victory to the Brazilian cinema and our culture,” said Oswaldo Barreto, who had stopped to snap a picture of the landmark.

“I’m Still Here” is a film about a family torn apart by the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil for more than two decades and has drawn millions of moviegoers across the South American country.

The narrative centers on his wife, Eunice Paiva, and her lifelong pursuit of justice.
