“Who killed him, only God knows, because God knows everything. I know that God himself will take care of them. We are here to pray to God as a family, because we still feel the pain of his assassination. But today we feel relieved to see our son has been recognised worldwide for the good he has done, especially fighting corruption in Congo.”

STORYLINE:
This school yard is a haven from conflict and destitution, here youngsters are allowed to play and to be children.
The Floribert Bwana Chui School of Peace is in Goma’s North Kivu province where the population has swelled by people escaping war.
The school is named after and dedicated to the memory of a young Congolese customs officer who was killed after he refused to accept bribes and ignore the importation of rotten food which he saw as a major health threat.
Chui was a member of Sant’Egidio, a lay Catholic community in Goma which now runs this school in his name.
Last month Pope Francis approved his beatification.
It comes 17 years after his lifeless body was found on a Goma street.
Aline Minani, a member of the Sant’Egidio community, sees Chui as an inspiration to others and is among those who’ve fought for his beatification.

She believes caring for the children is a way for her to carry on Chui’s mission. He too volunteered at this school which, since his death, has borne his name.
“We carry on his values for future generations because he fought until he lost his life to save the population of (North) Kivu, and to save the people of North Kivu, of Goma,” says Minani.
The spoiled rice that Chui refused to allow passage arrived from Rwanda in July 2007.
Yack’s Jean Jacques worked with Chui at the school and remembers the day he went missing.
“In the end we were told that Floribert’s body was found near ULPGL, near the Karibu hotel."
