San Diego – 23 January 2025
1. Border Patrol vehicle positions to look for migrants along the border wall
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Elliot Spagat, The Associated Press:
"We’re here in an area of San Diego, just east excuse me, just west of the San Ysidro port of entry, where not too long ago last year, up to 300 people would gather here each night and wait for days for the Border Patrol to pick them up. Now, it’s very quiet and the Border Patrol is back to what they were doing years ago, which is trying to pursue people who are eluding capture, not just find people who would turn themselves in for asylum and get released into the United States."
3. Pair of asylum-seeking migrants from China and Malaysia approach a Border Patrol agent
4. Migrants from China and Malaysia wait to be transported for their asylum claims
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Elliot Spagat, The Associated Press:
"Today, we saw – we were out for about six hours. The first five and a half or so, we saw absolutely nothing. Then we heard about a group of on the radio. We heard a group of three Chinese men and one Malaysian man who went through a little opening in the border wall in an area called Otay Mountains, which is just east of San Diego. They, for after about a half an hour, found a Border Patrol agent and turned themselves in.
6. Migrants from China and Malaysia are transported for their asylum claims
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Elliot Spagat, The Associated Press:
"China is a very difficult country to deport to. It’s just expensive for the flights. Diplomatic reasons, much different than Mexico or Guatemala, Honduras. So we’ll see; they might get released into the United States. President Trump this week resumed what’s called the Remain in Mexico program of making people wait in Mexico for their asylum hearings in the United States. But to our knowledge, Mexico has never accepted Chinese. So these are, these are the one of the some of the many challenges that, that President Trump is going to face in carrying out his pledges to seal the border."
8. Border Patrol vehicle drives along the border wall
STORYLINE:
San Diego, the busiest corridor for illegal border crossings over much of the last year, has seen traffic slow dramatically.

Agents were making 1,500 arrests a day in April. Last week, they made less than 250 arrests a day.

Instead of quickly releasing asylum-seekers who turned themselves in, Border Patrol agents are spending their shifts trying to find people who want to elude capture.

The Associated Press spent six hours with the Border Patrol and didn’t encounter any migrants until the last half hour. The Border Patrol scanner was quiet for long stretches.

Finally, three Chinese men and one Malaysian men made their way through a gap in the border wall and turned themselves in to agents.
