"Yesterday was the fun day in Saint Tammany parish. Today is the aftermath kind of day you know, it was snowing everybody’s outside; well today people are getting that cabin fever and they’re wanting to get out and go explore. But the thing is underneath that snow is ice and if you try to put your vehicle on this road it’s going to get dangerous quickly. There’s a reason why first responders said that they’re not going or it’s going to take them a lot longer to respond to just the day-to-day calls. They’re still doing the life or death calls but they can’t put the big fire trucks on these. They can’t drive fast, you can’t get anywhere quickly so that’s why we’re telling people to stay off the roads."

"You know, it’s kind of funny because we’re used to hurricanes here in southeast Louisiana. The plan we’re following is our debris pickup plan route. The routes that are usually impacted, trying to get those roads open first, same thing. We’re trying to get the snow off the roads first. So we have a plan for this it’s just usually applied for getting trees off the road and not snow."

STORYLINE:
Stretches of highway and interstate across the southern part of Louisiana were closed Wednesday – deemed too dangerous to drive on.
Authorities warned that people should remain at home – especially as local roads may not be cleared and melted snow is expected to freeze again over night, creating more dangerously slick conditions.
In New Orleans, where residents rely on bridges and elevated roadways that can freeze quicker because they are exposed to cold air from both above and below, only one major roadway into the city remained open.
Michael Vinsanau, a spokesperson for Saint Tammany Parish in Louisiana, said that while yesterday’s snowfall brought some winter fun in a part of the country that rarely sees snow, the aftermath can be much more hazardous.
