STORYLINE:
Heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain hit parts of the Deep South as a blast of Arctic air plunged much of the Midwest and the eastern U.S. into a deep freeze.

In Madisonville, Louisiana parents looked on with joy as kids built snowmen to experience the rare weather event.

"The kids love it, I mean they love the snow. I’m not a big fan of snow that’s why I live in Louisiana. But they love it so I’ll let them have their fun" Hilton Guidry said.

His wife Carolyn then chimed in, "this is unbelievable. It’s a cajun blizzard y’all" as she threw a snowball at him.

With temperatures below freezing, residents are sipping coffee and taking breaks from outside to stay warm.

Louisiana officials urged residents to “stay home" and not "go sightseeing” during the storm, warning any road ice could make travel dangerous.

That wouldn’t be a problem for mom’s like Robyn Harding, "Nobody wants to go inside. Everybody’s having fun. We’re making gumbo. It’s been great" she said.
