STORYLINE:
Hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron welcomed heads of state, government officials and representatives of international organizations at Elysee palace.

Wednesday sees the beginning of the Games where some 4,400 athletes with disabilities, permanent injuries or impairments will compete for 549 medals across 22 sports over 11 days in the French capital.

Paris, which just hosted the Olympics, again provides the backdrop for what promises to be another spectacle, with many of the same venues hosting Paralympic competitions.

Organizers have promised a spectacular show to open the Games.

Once again it’s being held outside the confines of a stadium, but unlike the rain-soaked Olympic opening ceremony, which featured a boat parade on the Seine River, the Paralympic ceremony is happening exclusively on land, with athletes parading down the famous Champs-Elysées to the ceremony at the Place de la Concorde.
