“So there was a crime that happened at this building. And just like crimes happen in underserved communities across the country. And this crime was then sort of sensationalized, and it was used in an attempt to make everybody that lives at this building to be made out as a criminal, right. And to, by and large, categorize our immigrant community as like criminal and involved with criminal activity, when in reality, these people and the people that live in this building are, you know, kids, breadwinners, workers, taxpayers and our neighbors."

“You know, all the data shows that immigrants of all different types, undocumented, documented, are actually much less likely to commit crime than American-born people. And so this narrative that tries to, like, make them seem like criminals is an intentional narrative that is being used to try and drum up support for the mass deportations that Trump has been, you know, saying he’s going to carry out in his first few days in office."

“I think the attitude here in Aurora, especially because he’s said that he’s going to target Aurora with Operation Aurora and mass deportations, we’re ready. The community is ready to support our immigrant communities. We are ready to fight back."

“The majority of our work up to now has been really making sure that people know their rights. That’s a huge, very important thing when it comes to dealing with ICE and mass deportations and raids and things like that.”

STORYLINE:
Immigrant rights activists are gearing up to resist President Donald Trump’s plans to carry out what he says will be the largest deportation in American history and are reaching out to those who might be targeted so they know their rights.
In Aurora, Colorado and the surrounding area, Katie Leonard, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, said Tuesday the immigrant community is frightened by the threat of deportation, and rightfully so.
The apartment complex is expected to close in about a month under an emergency court order, according to city officials.
