"Not in a day or two. At the very least, we need years to get a house. It is difficult to talk and difficult to describe. It is a feeling that I cannot describe. Thank God (for everything)."

STORYLINE:
As Palestinians continue to return to their homes across the Gaza Strip many have found nothing but piles of rubble where their houses used to stand.
In Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, which has witnessed some of Israel’s fiercest bombings over the past 15 months of conflict, one resident described his devastation after returning to his home to find it had been completely destroyed.
"It is difficult to talk and difficult to describe," Nizar Hussein said as he sat on the ruins of his home.
"The destruction is behind us and around and everywhere. I am trying to fix (some rooms) so that we can settle in our homes… We hope that life will get better than this."
Hassan, who was displaced from the camp several months ago, began building a makeshift shelter using the ruins and sheet and said it could take years to rebuild his home.
Associated Press footage of the area showed large swaths of the camp had been turned to rubble.
Jabaliya is home to the descendants of Palestinians who fled, or were forced to flee, during the war that led to Israel‘s creation in 1948.
Israel launched a campaign in early October that almost obliterated Jabaliya, a built up, urban refugee camp.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting around 250 people.
Some 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead.
In response, Israel launched an air and ground war that has killed over 47,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, and has reduced entire neighbourhoods to fields of rubble.
A ceasefire has seen a pause in the fighting and stirred modest hopes for ending the Israel-Hamas war.
