STORYLINE:
Hong Kong’s chief executive John Lee on Tuesday expressed his desire for good relations with the United States while warning against what he called "political interference" as Donald Trump began his second term in office.
"With the new president in office, this is a good start for China-US relations to be pushed to make greater success and greater progress from this new starting point," he told a press conference.
Reporters asked Lee about the fate of Jimmy Lai, a popular publisher and British citizen who has been in prison in Hong Kong for four years.
Trump has said that he would free Lai, but has not explained how he might do this.
Lee told reporters that any "political interference, any inappropriate action against Hong Kong, will not work."
He did not refer to Trump or Lai by name.
