STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday said it was “concerned” about the U.S. decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement again.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday directing the United States to again withdraw from the landmark agreement. .
This will deal a blow to worldwide efforts to combat global warming and once again distance the U.S. from its closest allies.
Asked about Trump’s decision at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said “climate change is a common challenge facing mankind. No country can stay out of it."
Guo reaffirmed China’s commitment to global efforts in tackling the climate issue.
He also underscored the role of the World Health Organization (WHO) in ensuring global public health when asked about another order by Trump to withdraw the US from the agency.
“The role of the WHO should only be strengthened, not weakened,” Guo insisted, adding that China would “continue to support the WHO in fulfilling its duties, deepen international public health cooperation, strengthen global health governance.”
