(28 Aug 1978) RR7835A THE NEW POPE WHAT CATHOLICS THINK
The world’s 700 million Roman Catholics have a new
spiritual leader. He is Pope John Paul, former
Patriarch of Venice, a man hardly anyone tipped to fill
the exalted post. His responsibilities will be many, the
challenges facing him enormous. Should he continue
his predecessor’s controversial stand on birth control,
for example, or seek a new line? Should he give way
to the increasing pressures for the church to get
involved politically or should he not? This report
examines these and other questions and asks
prominent Catholic spokesmen around the world
what they hope and expect from the new man in the
Vatican.
