(2 Jan 1978) It is more than a year since the first of the South
African tribal homelands was granted ‘independence’
in line with Pretoria’s policy for separate development,
better known as Apartheid. Still, the Transkei waits to
be accepted by the world as a nation in its own right.
Now, a second homeland has been given its freedom
– Bophutatswana. Like Transkei, Bophutatswana will
also have to wait to be recognised as a sovereign
state. Its dependence on South Africa is so complete,
and its territory so scattered amidst South African
land, that recognition may be a long time coming.
