RR7330A MOZAMBIQUE THE MASSACRE ALLEGATIONS

(28 Jul 1973) gal’s long drawn out war with black African guerrillas in its overseas province of Mozambique recently hit the world’s headlines when a former Catholic missionary in the province, Father Adrian Hastings, alleged that Portuguese troops had brutally massacred 400 innocent men, women and children in the village of Wiriyamu. Portugal fiercely denied the charges. A Roving Report camera team went to Mozambique, visited what the Portuguese claimed was the deserted site of the village but found no evidence of any massacre. The guerrillas of FRELIMO, the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique, have been trying to rid the province of Portuguese rule for the last ten years. Chief target of their raids is the giant Caborra Bassa dam, 25 miles upstream from the town of Tete on the River Zambesi. Twice as big as Egypt’s Aswan Dam, Cabora Bassa will supply enormous quantities of power to white southern Africa. The Portuguese claim it will also make possible a rapid expansion of agriculture, for black and white, in Mozambique, but FRELIMO believes the project will entrench Portuguese rule even more firmly in a land they consider their own. This report examines the massacre allegations, FRELIMO troops on patrol and assesses the importance of Cabora Bassa.
