“For Portugal, it’s very important this recognition of the equestrian art, because from (for) several centuries we made and do this special art with our horses from the Alter Real (stud farm). And it’s very important to all the riders in Portugal and abroad. Everybody’s very happy with this recognition and for us, Parques de Sintra (Sintra National Parks) is also very important because we manage this Portuguese National School of Equestrian Art.”

“We expect to create more impact with this recognition. We will open an exposition, exhibition nearby in Carriages Museum in the end of the month and we will do more workshops, more information and we will do performances to kids. We will try to start new things with the youth people to see and to watch this equestrian art.”

“What sets this horse apart from other breeds is its mental, balance and flexibility aspects. It is a horse with enormous moral flexibility because it was always selected for war, hunting, field manners and academic riding to represent the great academies in Europe.”

“The costumes we wear for daily work and Galas are the costumes that were worn in the royal ring at the end of the 18th century. How did this pass on to us? It was, as I said, through the bullfighting horse riders who maintained this tradition. Whether you like bullfighting or not, this is what we have to say: thanks to them, they brought these costumes and the same type of saddles and the same type of horse that was always selected for combat or for equestrian art.”

14. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Nuno Deveza, Stable Master and Head Groom:
“When braiding, we first clean the horse by hand and then divide the mane into two sides, on one side and the other, we make two braids. A Portuguese braid on the left side and another on the right side where we then have a needle to put the tapes on. We put one ribbon on the inside and the other on the outside, and then they are left with the ribbons all decorated, as shown in the frames and ready for the show. We only use this for galas.”

"Every handler who is here, every horse he grooms, feels the pleasure and the vanity. And look at his work afterwards – look, it’s beautiful there. Maybe there was a little more missing there and we always try to improve. We always try to improve, it’s as if we were leaving the house, we won’t leave the house without fixing our collar or shoes and all of this (work) is the same. That’s why we always have tremendous vanity when we prepare each horse."
