STORYLINE:
Hamas-run police forces have been deployed across the Gaza Strip since the start of a ceasefire with Israel on Sunday.
Uniformed police were deployed in streets in southern and northern Gaza to keep people safe, as well as help with humanitarian aid, said Mohamed Abu Watfa, undersecretary of Gaza’s interior ministry.
As he inspected forces in Gaza City on Monday, he said the aim was to end "chaos" across the Strip.
“The citizens, who sacrificed and stood with the resistance and who paid the price of this bloody war, our concern will be to watch over their comfort and protect them," Watfa said.
The interior ministry, which oversees the police in Gaza, said forces and officials have cooperated with other government and municipal agencies to “open roads, restore services… in areas from which the occupation’s military withdrew, especially in north Gaza and Rafah.”
It said it would intensify its efforts across Gaza to “restore order and activate all services the ministry’s agencies provided to residents.”
