"Today we will encounter Emily, Doron and Romi after 471 days in Hamas captivity. This reality is almost impossible to grasp. All of us on the medical staff within the health care system are ready to deal with any medical condition that could possibly result from that reality. The preparation process also entailed groundwork at six hospitals that are ready to admit the returning captives in the near term."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Sefi Mendelovich, deputy director-general of Israel’s Health Ministry:
"This is, of course, a complex situation, both emotionally and medically, for those returning to Israel and for their families. These are also emotionally complex times for the families of all the captives and for the Israeli people as a whole, both in Israel and abroad."

"I’m happy to report that they are in stable condition. That allows us and them to focus on what is the most important thing for now, is reuniting with their families. They are reunited with their families. And we will continue to monitor their clinical condition."

STORYLINE:
The three freed Israeli hostages and their mothers have arrived at a hospital in central Israel where they will reunite with the rest of their family and receive medical treatment.

The released hostages are 28-year-old Emily Damari, Romi Gonen, 24, and Doron Steinbrecher, 31.

Gonen was abducted from the Nova music festival, while the others were kidnapped from Kibbutz Kfar Aza.

Damari is an Israeli-British dual citizen and Steinbrecher has Israeli and Romanian citizenship.

During a briefing, Itai Pessach, head of the Safra Children’s Hospital at Sheba Medical Center and head of the hostage recovery team, said they were all in “stable condition.”

They are expected to stay in the hospital for a number of days.

All of the hostages were able to walk under their own power, despite concerns about their conditions.

The release of the first three hostages is expected to be followed by the release from Israel of 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of the first stage of a ceasefire deal.

The Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel killed some 1,200 people and left some 250 others captive.

Nearly 100 hostages remain in Gaza.

Israel responded with an offensive that has killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, who do not distinguish between civilians and militants but say women and children make up more than half the dead.
