STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the occupied West Bank celebrated while waiting for the release of dozens of prisoners held by Israel on Sunday night, as part of the deal between Israel and Hamas to pause the war that started in October 2023.
The crowd waited hours for the release of the 90 prisoners following the release of the first three hostages from Gaza, who arrived in Israel on Sunday for tearful reunions with families, hours after the fragile ceasefire took hold following 15 months of war.
In the West Bank, Israel’s military had warned Palestinians against public celebration.
Israeli security forces fired projectiles and moved journalists waiting to cover the release of Palestinian prisoners.
The Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel killed some 1,200 people and left some 250 others captive. Nearly 100 hostages remain in Gaza.
Israel responded with an offensive that has killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials, who do not distinguish between civilians and militants but say women and children make up more than half the dead.
