“This was a big challenge for me; not just me but also my friends who took part. I want to thank them for letting me reach the holy cross first. I want to invite young people to follow our example and embrace the Church and Orthodox Christianity.”

17. SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Aleksandar Spasojevic, swimmer:
“I think that everyone who has faith and believes in Jesus Christ can meet this challenge and complete the swim successfully. Truth be told, the water was cold, between 3 and 5 degrees (Celsius). The air temperature was also low, between 0 and 2 degrees. Honestly, compared to previous years, the years since I started taking part (in the Epiphany swim), this was probably the coldest day.”

STORYLINE:
Dozens of people took part in a traditional swimming race in a Bosnian town to mark the feast of Epiphany on Sunday.

Braving just above freezing temperatures, swimmers in eastern town of Visegrad jumped into the Drina River and swam to a crucifix placed in the water as part of a ceremony commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ.

It is believed that the person who retrieves the wooden cross will be freed from evil spirits and will be healthy throughout the year.

Epiphany, which celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan, is one of the most important holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.

While the churches in Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Romania celebrate the feast on January 6, other Orthodox Churches in Russia, Bosnia and Serbia follow the Julian calendar, according to which Epiphany is celebrated on January 19, as their Christmas falls on January 7.
