STORYLINE:
A Palestinian family in the Israeli-occupied West Bank is looking forward to the release of their son in the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.
Sunday will be a special occasion for the Ataya family from the village of Kafr Niema, northwest of Ramallah, as it marks the birthday of their son Osaama, whose name is included in the list of prisoners to be released in the deal.
Israel’s Justice Ministry published a list of 95 Palestinian prisoners that are set to be released on Sunday during the first stage of the ceasefire.
There are 25 male prisoners slated for release, all under age 21, and 70 female prisoners.
"On Sunday, there will be a special occasion as it marks Osaama’s birthday as he was born on 19 January 2006. He will turn 19 and begin his 20th year of life. It will be a celebration of both a new year of his life and, God willing, his release," said Nasser Ataya, Osaama’s father.
"The feeling we have about it is indescribable," Nasser added.
Osaama Ataya was arrested on 22 of October 2023 and was accused of terror activities, according to his father.
The youngest prisoners who are set be released are 16 years old. The prisoners were accused of crimes like incitement, vandalism, supporting terror, terror activities, attempted murder, or throwing stones or Molotov cocktails.
One of the most well-known prisoners on the list is Khalida Jarrar, 62, a leading member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who has been in and out of Israeli prison in recent years.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch said Jarrar’s repeated arrests are part of Israel’s wider crackdown on non-violent political opposition.
