STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Pro-Palestinian protesters rallied in front of the U.S. embassy in Jakarta on Friday to support the ceasefire in Gaza.

Waving Palestinian flags, demonstrators chanted and sang songs during the rally which was organized by the Indonesian Youth Alliance for Palestine.

The group has been organizing such rallies in support of Gaza since October 2023.

“Hopefully as your brothers in Indonesia, (someday) we can meet and can pray together at Al Aqsa Mosque," said Basuki Rahmat, addressing Palestinians.

Indonesia’s foreign affairs ministry on Thursday released a statement to welcome the ceasefire agreement in Gaza as has been consistently advocated by Indonesia and the international community.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, has long been a strong supporter of Palestinians.

Israel’s security cabinet on Friday recommended approving a deal that would pause the fighting in Gaza and release dozens of hostages held by militants.

The deal will now go to the full cabinet for approval before the ceasefire goes into effect. The prime minister’s office said that if a deal is passed, the ceasefire could start Sunday with the first hostages released.
