"The fact that (Israeli National Security Minister Itamar) Ben-Gvir announced that him and the other ministers from the party are going to resign from the government, which means that he’s no longer committed to the coalition. This doesn’t bring enough, doesn’t shift enough votes to the opposition with which it can topple the coalition or embarrass the coalition. The coalition still has a majority.“

“In fact, it might be the case that for (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu to get rid of Ben Gvir at this stage, is getting rid of a headache. Ben Gvir is a constant nuisance within the government. He keeps threatening to quit. He keeps, you know, creating havoc. And Netanyahu can do without him.“

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Shmuel Rosner, a senior fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute:
“One of the great advantages that Netanyahu has as a leader, not as a person but as a leader, is that he’s always highly concerned. He’s almost paranoid in the way he conducts politics. Maybe that’s why he survives for so long. Netanyahu never misses a hint of trouble, and he would go the extra mile to make sure that his coalition is maintained."

STORYLINE:
An Israeli analyst on Friday downplayed the likely impact of a threat by Israel’s hard-line national security minister to quit government over the ceasefire deal with Hamas, suggesting it may even relieve the prime minister of a "nuisance" within the coalition.

Israel’s security Cabinet recommended approval of the deal on Friday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed an agreement had been reached that would pause the 15-month war with Hamas in Gaza and release dozens of hostages held by militants there.

The ceasefire agreement has drawn fierce resistance from Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners, which the Israeli prime minister depends on to remain in power.

On Thursday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir threatened to quit the government if Israel approved the ceasefire. There was no immediate comment from Ben-Gvir following Netanyahu’s announcement Friday.

"This doesn’t bring enough, doesn’t shift enough votes to the opposition with which it can topple the coalition or embarrass the coalition. The coalition still has a majority,“ explained Shmuel Rosner, a senior fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute.

“In fact, it might be the case that for Netanyahu to get rid of Ben Gvir at this stage, is getting rid of a headache," Rosner told The Associated Press via video call on Friday.

"Ben-Gvir is a constant nuisance within the government. He keeps threatening to quit. He keeps, you know, creating havoc. And Netanyahu can do without him,“ he added.

Netanyahu, an adept politician, will also do what it takes to keep the coalition together, said Rosner.

"Netanyahu never misses a hint of trouble, and he would go the extra mile to make sure that his coalition is maintained," he added.

The deal will now go to the full cabinet for approval before the ceasefire goes into effect.

The prime minister’s office said that if a deal is passed, the ceasefire could start Sunday with the first hostages released.

Netanyahu’s office said earlier that there were last minute snags in finalizing the ceasefire agreement.
