“This 25th edition, we wanted to come up with an interesting theme. Our most popular visitors are children, so they can see Hell in this tent. Connoisseurs of classic Czech fairytales will recognise a number of fairytale characters. To balance things out a bit and give space for post-Christmas time, we have created a carved nativity scene in the second tent. This is interesting because it is the largest nativity scene that has been carved out of ice in the Czech Republic.”

“For the last few years we have had a stable team of top artistic carvers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, led by Mr. Marsalek. Many of them have participated in international carving competitions. There were seven of them and for seven days they were creating these sculptures.”

“Ice cubes have been produced in freezers in Opava since September. This year there were more than 960 of them. Two trucks and one lorry brought them here. The cubes weighed 44 tonnes in total. Each cube has to be shaped on both sides with a chainsaw. The rough outline of the figure is then formed.“

STORYLINE:
LEADIN:
1,000 metres above sea level in Czechia’s Beskydy Mountains, a frosty gang of devils is enticing visitors from all over the Czech Republic.
The annual ice festival is underway and this year’s theme is all about traditional fairy tales and their devilish characters.
Artists have carved designs out of huge blocks of ice, in the shape of horned devils and of a nativity scene.
STORYLINE:
Hell has officially frozen over – at least in the Czech mountain saddle of Pustevny.
At this annual festival, artists have created sculptures of devils from blocks of ice.
Seated on on a throne with pitchfork, or topped with the traditional horns, the evil character is easily recognisable.
But to balance underworld, they have also added something a little more heavenly.
“Connoisseurs of classic Czech fairy tales will recognise a number of fairy tale characters. To balance things out a bit and give space for post-Christmas time, we have created a carved nativity scene in the second tent. This is interesting because it is the largest nativity scene that has been carved out of ice in the Czech Republic,” says organiser Petr Lessy.
The festival is held at an altitude of 1,000 metres.
It’s currently in its 25th year.
But creating the spectacle began in September last year.
