STORYLINE:
While a final decision about a ceasefire was still on hold by the Israeli government, hundreds of Iraqis welcomed Thursday the announcement of a possible deal that would pause the fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The demonstration was called by Abu Hanifa Mosque, a prominent Sunni mosque in the Iraqi capital, and began just after the Isha (night) prayer.
"These crowds are happy and pleased for this victory by our stationed brothers in Palestine," said local Imam Adnan al Hamidi, also participating in the event.
People raised Iraqi and Palestinian flags during the demonstration, marching through the streets.
Demonstrator Aya Talib said she was "happy and full of joy" for the much-needed cessation of hostilities.
“This is a victory for the few and vulnerable people which stood up against the most arrogant entity in the world, against the most powerful entity in the world," she said.
Rising tensions — both in negotiations and in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government coalition — raised concerns about the implementation of the deal just a day after U.S. President Joe Biden and key mediator Qatar announced it was complete.
Netanyahu said Thursday that a last-minute dispute with Hamas was holding up Israeli approval of the long-awaited deal.
Israeli airstrikes, meanwhile, killed at least 72 people in the war-ravaged territory.
The deal announced Wednesday would see scores of hostages held in Gaza released and a pause in fighting with a view to eventually wind down a 15-month war that has destabilized the Middle East and sparked worldwide protests.
