11.SOUNDBITE (Amharic) Ali Mengistu, horse cart owner:
"Some people overload their horses with 10 quintals of excessive weight and abandon them on the streets when they become tired or injured. However, I would never do that. My horse has its own stable which I clean thoroughly. I make sure it has everything it needs to eat and always has access to water. Since this animal cannot speak it’s my duty to look after it. If veterinarians are not nearby, I will either visit them or consult with them by phone to arrange for a check-up. I prioritize my horse’s health."

"Abandoned horses on the road are affected by two diseases: ulcerative lymphangitis and epizootic lymphangitis. While these conditions are treatable, the treatment costs often surpass the purchase price of the horse, reaching thousands of birr (local currency). As a result, we sometimes have to euthanize them. The most severely injured horses are euthanized to protect our society and preserve our culture."

23. SOUNDBITE (Amharic), Mulugeta Alemu, veterinarian:
"Due to their perceived low economic value, these animals often receive minimal attention and are overlooked in policy discussions. Yet, when we consider their contributions to the community, they are extremely valuable. In rural areas with few cars, horses and pack animals are essential for transportation and provide considerable benefits. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding access to veterinary care and community awareness."
