1. Does China have any comments on the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip?
China welcomes the deal on the Gaza ceasefire and hostage exchange and hopes that the agreement can be effectively implemented so a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza can be achieved at an early date.
Since the outbreak of this round of the Gaza conflict, China has always called for a ceasefire, actively worked to de-escalate the situation, protected civilians, and provided humanitarian assistance. China supports the implementation of the ceasefire deal and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza and make positive efforts to restore post-war reconstruction.
We also sincerely hope that the relevant parties will take the Gaza ceasefire as an opportunity to promote the easing of local tensions. China is willing to work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
2. According to U.S. media reports, outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden has decided to extend for two years the “Deferred Enforced Departure” (DED) status of certain Hong Kong residents currently residing in the U.S. and to expand the scope of eligible persons. What are China’s comments?
At present, Hong Kong’s security, democracy and people’s rights to freedom have been more effectively safeguarded, and the prospects for development are brighter. Any attempt to smear Hong Kong will not succeed, nor will it shake the confidence of the international community in Hong Kong.
The U.S. side should respect China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong, abide by the principles of international law and the basic norms of international relations, stop smearing the policy of China’s Central Government in governing Hong Kong and the successful practice of “One Country, Two Systems”, and stop meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs.
3. U.S. Secretary of Defense-designate Pete Hegseth referred to North Korea with the term “nuclear power” during his nomination confirmation hearing. The governments of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan have reiterated that they do not recognize North Korea’s status as a “nuclear power” and maintain an unchanged position on the peninsular denuclearization policy. Does the Foreign Ministry have any comments on his remarks?
China’s basic position on the Korean Peninsula remains unchanged. China has always believed that maintaining peace and stability on the peninsula and promoting a political solution to the peninsula issue is in the common interests of all parties, and hopes that all parties will make joint efforts to this end.
4. Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at a Senate hearing that China is the most powerful and dangerous adversary the U.S. has ever faced, and that the U.S. must make it clear to China that if it invades Taiwan, it will pay the price. What is China’s comment on this?
China’s development has a clear historical logic and strong endogenous momentum, and our goal is bright and clear: to give our people a better life and make greater contributions to the world. China has always viewed and handled China-U.S. relations in accordance with the principle of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation put forward by President Xi Jinping, while resolutely defending its own sovereignty, security and development interests.
