4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Chaima Issa, member of the opposition National Salvation Front:
"Today (Jan. 14) represents a moment of joy, pride and honor in my heart. It shows that perseverance is possible and that the fall of a tyrant is possible. On Jan. 14, 2011, people did not know that (former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine) Ben Ali would leave, but they insisted and told him, ‘dégage’, leave. He responded and was afraid. Therefore, dreams are possible, and the fall of a tyrant is possible. Jan. 14 represents everything positive and remains a bright spot in Tunisia’s history."

5. Various of the protest
6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Imed Khemiri, spokesperson for Ennahda party:
"The situation in Tunisia has not improved in the 14 years after the revolution in terms of human rights as all the gains are under threat, socially, economically, developmentally and financially. We see the country regressing in these vital areas that matter to Tunisians, who are suffering greatly due to the policies of governments that came after July 2021 (when President Kais Saied issued his exceptional measures). These are silent governments that do not address the Tunisian people and have not presented anything, not a vision or project."

7. Various of verbal altercation between supporters of Saied and opposition protesters
8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) no name given, Saied supporter:
"Was (now-imprisoned leader of the Ennahda party Rached) Ghannouchi present during the revolution? Were the former prisoners present during the revolution? They were in prison during the Jan. 14 Revolution under Ben Ali. Jan. 14 was manufactured by (former U.S. diplomat Paul) Bremer, the Zionists, the Americans, overseas forces and Turkey. They are agents of Qatar. We do not celebrate Jan. 14. The real day of revolution in Tunisia is Dec. 17."

STORYLINE:
Tunisian opposition members and their supporters demonstrated in the capital Tunis on Tuesday, commemorating the anniversary of the country’s 2011 revolution.

They called for the release of activists and political detainees and demanded the resignation of President Kais Saied.

Protesters, including family members of those imprisoned on charges of undermining state security, held pictures of some of the detainees.

The protest was organized by opposition forces, including the National Salvation Front, a coalition of several parties such as the Islamist movement Ennahdha, whose 83-year-old leader Rached Ghannouchi is among those imprisoned by the state.

He was sentenced to 15 months behind bars for abetting terrorism and inciting hatred—charges his attorneys have called politically motivated.

Fourteen years after they toppled the country’s longtime dictator, Tunisians are protesting Saied for ushering in what they see as democratic backsliding.

They blame him for quashing the aims of the revolution that kicked off the Arab Spring in 2011.

Over the past four years, Saied has temporarily suspended Tunisia’s parliament, rewritten the country’s constitution and imprisoned more than 20 political opponents for allegedly undermining state security.
