Our differences must be overcome by peaceful means and by the use of the institutions that are the main assurance of the democratic state. To the international community, we also send an appeal, to continue to support Mozambique, in a transparent and genuine manner, we ask you to support its new President. Mozambique needs peace, national reconciliation. Our country needs stability, deepening of democracy but above all our country needs respect for its time, its sovereignty, so that without external pressures it can find its own way to solve its matters.”

STORYLINE:
The new president of Mozambique has been sworn in at a ceremony in Maputo.
The inauguration of Daniel Francisco Chapo from long-ruling Frelimo party took place with a handful of world leaders in attendance.
Among them the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló and Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa.
Chapo succeeds Filipe Nyusi, who served the maximum two terms.
