6. SOUNDBITE (English) Eric Tucker, The Associated Press:
"The Justice Department has released a report from Special Counsel Jack Smith about Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. This is a report that’s being released in the days before Trump is to be inaugurated as the 47th president. The report documents various schemes that Trump engaged in in his failed effort to cling to power. Much of this has already been well-established and is already known. But what’s really striking from this report is that it includes Smith’s own words and Smith’s own very strong defense of the investigation and the prosecution team that he built. He says he stands fully behind his decision to seek criminal charges, and he believes that had the case been able to go to trial, that Trump would have been convicted. Now, it’s worth remembering that in November, just weeks after Trump won the presidential election, the Smith team wound up dismissing the case because it said longstanding Justice Department policy prohibits the indictment of a sitting president. So this report now, which was released by the Justice Department, is likely to be the final and ultimate say about Trump’s conduct from the Department of Justice."

STORYLINE:
Special counsel Jack Smith says in a report his team “stood up for the rule of law” as it investigated President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Smith says he stands behind his decision to bring criminal charges against Trump and believes the Republican would’ve been convicted had he not won the 2024 election.

The report comes days before Trump is to return to the White House and focuses fresh attention on his frantic but failed effort to cling to power in 2020.

The Justice Department sent the report to Congress early Tuesday after a judge refused to block its release.

Trump says he’s “totally innocent.”
