STORYLINE:
Dozens of protesters formed a human chain on Tuesday outside Israel’s parliament demanding a deal to release all hostages held in Gaza.
Protesters chanted the names of the hostages and "come back" in Hebrew while holding 98 photographs of the hostages remaining in Gaza since the Oct. 7 attacks 466 days ago by Hamas militants.
Two cousins of Shay Dickmann were kidnapped on Oct. 7 and held in Gaza.
Yarden Roman-Gat was freed in a ceasefire deal that exchanged hostages for Palestinian prisoners in late 2023.
But, after nearly a year in captivity, her other cousin Carmel Gat was declared dead by the Israeli military.
"This is the chance, we can’t let it go until they are all here with us," said Dickmann, speaking of the anticipated deal between Israel and Hamas being negotiated in Qatar.
Israel and Hamas have been holding indirect talks for more than a year aimed at ending the war in Gaza and returning scores of militant-held hostages in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.
The talks have repeatedly stalled over several key issues, including the details of the exchange, whether the ceasefire would be permanent and the withdrawal of Israeli forces despite intensive mediation by the United States, Qatar and Egypt.
As each side has accused the other of backtracking, the war has continued.
Dozens of Palestinians have been killed each day in Israeli strikes, and most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people are huddled in squalid tent camps.
Humanitarian groups struggle to deliver desperately needed aid and experts have warned of famine.
In Israel, families of the hostages have held weekly rallies demanding a deal for their release, fearing their loved ones will die in the harsh conditions of their captivity the longer the fighting drags on.
