"I am the leader of the Survakari group of the village of Svetlya, one of the oldest Survakari groups in the region. They say that the feast of Surva has existed for a long time, we saw documents that it existed during at least centuries ago. Now we are celebrating January 13 – the New Year in the old Gregorian style and we are doing the Survakari holiday."

"The meaning of the holiday itself and its importance is to drive away evil, and the next day, on January 14, we go through all the houses to wish luck and prosperity and in every house the bells are jingled to drive away evil and bring good."

STORYLINE:

A carnival to mark the end of winter is making a small Bulgarian town a magnet for tourists.
People in vibrant costumes and elaborate masks joined the Surva festival, dancing in the streets to drive off evil spirits.
STORYLINE:
As night falls, the Bulgarian village of Svetlya comes alive with the sound of bells, when costumed people take to the streets.
The performers, called “kukeri” or mummers, perform their mystic dances around bonfires, or walk through people’s houses ringing bells to drive away evil spirits and to celebrate the beginning of spring and hopes for a good harvest, health, fertility and happiness.

The festival of Surva is celebrated here on the night of January 13, the eve of the 14th of January, which was once celebrated as New Year’s Day according to the old Gregorian calendar.
