STORYLINE:
Top diplomats from Japan and South Korea met in Seoul on Monday to reaffirm close relations as the two shared serious concerns over North Korea’s missile activities in the region.

In the first visit by a Japanese foreign minister to Seoul in seven years, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul welcomed his Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya despite the country’s on-going political turmoil over President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment.

“As the security environment surrounding both countries becomes increasingly severe, cooperation between Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. is more important than ever before in effectively responding to increasingly complex international issues,” Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya told the press during a joint news conference.

During a bilateral meeting, the two ministers shared “serious concerns” over the progression of North Korean missile launches and the development of military cooperation with Russia, he said.

According to U.S., Ukrainian and South Korean assessments, North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops and conventional weapons systems to support Moscow’s war campaign.

There are concerns that Russia could transfer advanced weapons technology to North Korea in return, which could potentially enhance the threat posed by leader Kim Jong Un’s nuclear-armed military.
