"This morning, we’ve learned that there is an advancement towards a deal. The families are feeling unease and not understanding exactly what’s going on. We’re not getting any guidance yet from the government of Israel understanding if it is a deal for all the hostages or is it just a partial deal that there is no confidence that this deal that is starting today with a number of hostages will actually continue to a deal that will have a second stage or third stage."

"About ten days ago when we saw the list of hostages coming out and we did not see the name of our son, as well as 65 other hostages, we thought that the best place for us to be would be to get on a plane and go to Qatar. Why? Because in Qatar we have the negotiators. And we felt it was important for the negotiators, the Qatar representatives that are working on this deal. And we met people from the prime minister office of Qatar, from the minister of state on the national security team. And it was important for us to give the mandate that we felt the families feel at this moment, which is a deal that includes all of the hostages."

STORYLINE:
The father of an Israeli soldier who was killed in the October 7. attack, and whose remains were taken into Gaza, says the families of the hostages were not kept informed about a potential ceasefire deal with Hamas.

Officials say U.S. and Arab mediators made significant progress overnight toward brokering a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the release of scores of hostages held in the Gaza Strip, but a deal has not been reached yet.

Despite the progress, Ruby Chen, whose son, Itay Chen, was killed in an Israeli military base on Oct. 7, 2023, said “the families are feeling unease and not understanding exactly what’s going on.”

“There is no confidence that this deal that is starting today with a number of hostages will actually continue to a deal that will have a second stage or third stage,” he added.

Four officials said Monday that progress had been made and that the coming days would be critical for ending more than 15 months of fighting that has destabilized the Middle East and killed tens of thousands.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the talks.

On several occasions over the past year, U.S. officials have said they were on the verge of reaching a deal, only to have the talks stall.

Israel’s campaign in Gaza has killed more than 46,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, whose count doesn’t give a breakdown between fighters and civilians.

Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people and abducted around 250 others in the attack that ignited the war.
