9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lu Daliang, spokesperson of the General Administration of Customs of China:
“Some countries politicized trade issues, abused export control measures groundlessly and restricted the export to China of relevant products, otherwise China will import more goods. On this year’s import, there is huge space to grow not only because we have a huge market with great potential, but more importantly we are committed to proactively expanding imports to share with the world the opportunities of China’s development.”

“Some countries have repeatedly hyped up this issue (of overcapacity). It is essentially protectionism to contain China’s development and that will undermine the stability of the global industrial supply chain. Only by insisting to open up and cooperate can we be on the right direction to achieve mutual benefit and win-win result in world economic development.”

STORYLINE:
China’s exports in December grew at a faster pace than expected, as factories rushed to fill orders to beat higher tariffs that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose once he takes office.

Exports rose 10.7% from a year earlier. Economists had forecast they would grow about 7%.

Imports rose 1% year-on-year. Analysts had expected imports to shrink about 1.5%.

Speaking at a news conference in Beijing on Monday Wang Lingjun, Vice Minister of China’s General Administration of Customs, said total foreign trade in 2024 “set another record high."

With exports outpacing imports, China’s trade surplus grew to $104.84 billion.

Trump has pledged to impose 10% tariffs on Chinese goods and close some loopholes that exporters currently use to sell their products more cheaply in the U.S.

If enacted, his plans would likely raise prices in America and squeeze sales and profit margins for Chinese exporters.
