STORYLINE:
China on Monday opposed the U.S. adding a Chinese company to a sanction list targeting Russia’s energy sector.

The U.S. announced on Friday that it would include Chinese port operator Shandong United Energy Pipeline Transportation Company in its latest sanction list for providing material support to the U.S.-sanctioned Russian shipping company Sovcomflot.

The Chinese terminal operator was found facilitating port calls and discharges of a U.S.-blocked Russian crude oil tanker, which was associated with Sovocomflot, in September and December 2024, according to the U.S. Department of State.

Asked about the decision at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiankun rejected what he called “illegal unilateral sanctions” and accused the U.S. of disrupting normal economic cooperation on national security grounds.

Guo also urged the Philippines to “stop malicious hype” in response to the Philippines’ protest over the presence of Chinese coast guard vessels in its exclusive economic zone.

The protest was triggered by two Chinese Coast Guard ships, including a 12,000-tonne vessel widely known as the “Monster,” detected this month near the Scarborough Shoal and coastlines of Zambales province, according to a statement by the Philippine Maritime Council.

Guo reasserted China’s claim in the disputed waters of the South China Sea and defended the Coast Guard’s navigation there as “reasonable, lawful and beyond reproach.”

Separately, Guo again slammed the Tibetan government-in-exile as a “separatist political group” after President Penpa Tsering warned that Beijing’s strict information censorship could hinder verification of the accurate casualty reports in a deadly earthquake in Tibet last Tuesday.

In response, Guo said “We are very clear and remain highly vigilant about its separatist nature and political schemes,” adding that the country was confident they would get around the difficulties and restore living order soon.
