“As much as I possibly could, I gave my best to get citizens to know me, to get to know my programme. I offered a vision for a better, different, proud Croatia. I’m aware that some of the voters did not choose based on the programme or vision. They had other reasons, but that’s a democratic right. With my programme, I wanted to send a clear message, that Croatia can do better, and deserves better.”

“Zoran Milanovic (Croatian incumbent president) and me are separated by completely different spiritual, moral, professional values, as well as ideas about the future of our country. The decision was made by citizens, democratically, and as such it must be respected.”

13. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Andrej Plenkovic, Croatian Prime Minister:
“I hereby congratulate Dragan Primorac for his effort, for everything that he has done during the campaign, in spite of the very demanding circumstances that he found himself in, which you could see for yourself. He was being attacked from the far-right and the far-left. That obviously had an effect in the first round and in the runoff too. I thank him for his really engaging campaign and the support he received. We have duly noted the result of this election. This is the third election in the past year.”

“We don’t have a problem. We have no problem. What we have are victories behind us, and work ahead of us. For Croatia. That’s it. Thank you very much. Goodbye.”
STORYLINE:
Croatian presidential candidate Dragan Primorac on Sunday said he "gave his best" as he addressed supporters following the country’s runoff vote which appeared to give incumbent Zoran Milanovic another five-year term.
Near-complete official results of the vote showed Milanovic, a critic of the European Union and NATO, overwhelmingly won reelection on Sunday.
Milanovic won nearly 74% of the vote compared to his challenger Dragan Primorac, who gained around 26%, according to the results released by Croatia’s state election authorities after more than 70% of the ballots were counted.
The result presents a major boost for Milanović, who is a critic of Western military support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
“As much as I possibly could, I gave my best to get citizens to know me, to get to know my programme," Primorac said as he addressed his supporters at their election headquarters in Zagreb.
"With my programme, I wanted to send a clear message, that Croatia can do better, and deserves better.”
Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, who sparred with Milanovic during his first term, congratulated Primorac on his election campaign.
Milanovic, 58, is the most popular politician in Croatia, and is sometimes compared to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for his combative style of communication with political opponents.
