STORYLINE:
Yazidi survivor Salvana Khedhir returned to Iraq from Syria after 10 years, to find out that several of her family members had been killed or are still missing.

Khedhir, who was thought to be dead, left Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad last month.

Islamic State militants had abducted her when she was 17 years old. She was taken together with her family before being sent into Syria.

The militants rampaged through Iraq’s Sinjar district, killing and enslaving thousands from the Yazidi religious minority.

"There was a lot of suffering, hunger and exhaustion" in Syria, Khedhir said, adding that women and children were dying from the cold.

Khedhir’s father and two of her brothers were killed and were identified in a mass grave near Sinjar, while her mother and another brother are still missing.

Only one of her sisters is still in Iraq but the other four moved to Germany and settled down there.
