STORYLINE:
Mourners attended the funeral on Sunday of one of four Israeli soldiers killed in the northern Gaza Strip on Saturday.
Sergeant Yahav Maayan, 19, of the Nahal Brigade’s 931st Battalion, died after gunmen set explosives in the area and opened fire on the troops, according to Israeli media.
Six other soldiers were wounded in the incident, two of them seriously.
Israeli forces have mounted an offensive against Hamas in the far north of the Gaza Strip in recent weeks, intensifying operations in the Beit Hanoun area, according to Israeli media.
The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and abducting around 250.
A third of the 100 hostages still held in Gaza are believed to be dead.
Israel’s air and ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza has killed over 45,800 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry.
It does not say how many were fighters, but says women and children make up over half the fatalities.
The Israeli military says it killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.
