Qatar’s Prime Minister has announced a ceasefire will take effect between Israel and Hamas on January 19. Qatar has been playing a key role as mediator in the ceasefire talks. In the US, both President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump announced a deal has gone through. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says final details still need to be worked out.
Thousands were celebrating in in the streets in Gaza and Israel. The deal calls for a stop to the hostilities that started with the Hamas-led terror attack on October 7, 2023. Since then, tens of thousands of Palestinians, and hundreds of Israelis have been killed. In the first phase of the ceasefire deal, Hamas will hand over 33 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
