“This year is the Brooklyn Museum’s 200th anniversary, and we’ve been creating a series of exhibitions and events to celebrate this momentous time. And for me, I worked on the one titled ‘Solid Gold’ and ‘Solid Gold’ is both a selection of works from the permanent collection, but it includes fashion and jewelry and other art forms to show that even though ancient art might seem far away, it’s actually very present in our lives today.”

“I think at this time in the world, we’re all looking for a little bit of joy. And gold has that quality. It can bring you great joy. Gold in a lot of cultures is associated with wealth. It’s associated with some types of honors. And for a long time, gold was really considered to be elitist. But I always like to point out today that our smart phones, our iPhones, wouldn’t be working if they didn’t have gold in them. So gold has been democratized by technology.”

“We have a section in the so-called crown from Egyptian queens to hip hop kings. And I was very much interested in that relationship between hip hop culture and ancient cultures. So, there’s several moments in this show where that happens. For example, we have a gold head dress by The Blonds, which was worn by Janelle Monáe, and it looks like it could be something that Cleopatra would wear or something that Rick James might have worn in the early 1980s.”

“When I first started working on the exhibition, I had a mood board of objects and there were collection objects like the gold wreath and the piano, our gold ground paintings. I knew I wanted to have Egyptian works, but then there were key gold objects out in the world. I wanted to investigate whether we could borrow them for this show. I always wanted to have Marc Quinn’s gold sculpture of Kate Moss in the show, and that took a minute to make happen. But it’s here in New York for the first time.”
