“Our teams headed to a gathering of civilians at the site of the Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, where there was a gathering of civilians. Since this mosque has great significance, especially after the fall of the regime, civilians flock to it from all governorates. We were informed of injuries. Our teams went to the location and recovered the bodies of three women and three children, including a seven-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, who suffered fractures as a result of overcrowding.”

STORYLINE:
Three women were killed and several injured, including five children, in a stampede at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus Friday, the Syrian civil defense force known as the White Helmets said in a statement.

Dozens of people remained around the mosque as initiatives to distribute food continued despite the deaths.

“Our teams went to the location and recovered the bodies of three women and three children, including a seven-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy” said Banaa Bahrie, a rescue worker with the White Helmets.

An Associated Press photographer at the scene said there was an initiative to distribute food after Friday prayers which caused the swell in numbers.
