“The Detroit Auto show was gigantic in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s and even part of the ‘90s. I used to go to it as a kid, and it was really a spectacle. You saw all the new cool cars. You saw concept cars that were never going to see the light of day, but they were sort of show-off pieces for the car companies. All of the car companies were there. All of the big-shot auto executives were there from all around the world. It was a big industry hoopla."

“January is kind of a slow time in Michigan. But the auto show, it’s a time of excitement. And glad to see it back in January.”

“Auto shows do have a future, despite the fact that they’re smaller and they’re not as exciting. Although a few of them will close, some of them already have closed, but I think Detroit will stay open and will go forward as it reinvents itself into this consumer, sort of fun day for the families, good way to check out all of the cars in one place if you’re looking for a car.”

It’s famous for being ‘motor city’ but the Detroit Motor Show in the US is less glitzy than it used to be according to some analysts.
The pared-down show gets underway today (Friday) with the traditional media preview before the doors are thrown open to the public.
STORYLINE:
The Detroit Motor Show was once a must-see event for industry executives and journalists.
This year will feature a dearth of vehicle debuts, less-glitzy displays and fewer reporters.
“Auto shows do have a future, despite the fact that they’re smaller and they’re not as exciting,” Gordon says.
