STORYLINE:
The Detroit Auto Show started up its engines on Friday with the traditional media preview.
The show once was a must-see event for industry executives and journalists. This year features a dearth of vehicle debuts, less-glitzy displays and fewer reporters.
But it still has plenty of cars – 500 in total representing 30 different brands, said Sam Klemet (kleh-MET’), the show’s co-executive director.
This year’s show is geared more toward consumers and less toward the industry. Automakers are offering test drives and ride-alongs on four different tracks.
“The Detroit Auto Show has been around for nearly a century. And it’s been known as one of the most important conventions in the world, not only auto shows, because, again, this is where the world comes to showcase their vehicles,” Klemet said. “Detroit is the home of the auto industry. The Detroit Auto Show is open to the public starting on Saturday and running through Jan. 20.
