“The second decision taken by the Constitutional Court on December 6 is anti-constitutional and illegal and an abuse and an attack on constitutional order because the ongoing electoral process was interrupted, this is illegal. The constitutional court went over its attributions as a guardian of the Romanian constitution.”

STORYLINE:
Thousands of supporters of Calin Georgescu, the winner of Romania’s first round of presidential elections, protested on Friday in central Bucharest against the Constitutional Court decision to annul the elections.
"Romanians are unhappy because we couldn’t vote, this is something essential, regardless on who one wants to vote for, one should be allowed to do so, this is our first demand or win," said Adrian Izvoranu, the vice leader of Romanian business owners.
Georgescu’s lawyer also attended the protest.
Marina Ioana Alexandru told The AP that “the decision taken by Constitutional Court on December 6 is anti-constitutional and illegal and an abuse and an attack on constitutional order because the ongoing electoral process was interrupted."
Romania was plunged into turmoil end of 2024 after Georgescu’s surprise success in the presidential race, after allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference emerged.
Days before the Dec. 8 runoff, the Constitutional Court made the unprecedented move to annul the presidential race after a trove of declassified intelligence alleged Russia organized a sprawling campaign across social media to promote Georgescu.
The court cited the illegal use of digital technologies including artificial intelligence, as well as undeclared sources of funding.
Without naming Georgescu, the court said one candidate received “preferential treatment" on social media platforms, distorting voters’ expressed will.
